Why is it called Blu-Ray? Current DVD optical disc technologies rely on a red laser beam to read and write the data. The new format uses a blue-violet laser beam and thus the name Blu-Ray. The benefit of the blue-violet laser is that it has a shorter wavelength than the red and thus more information can be stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it is the same size as the DVD and CD discs with which we are familiar. |
